Blog: Door and Window Restoration

Home restoration jobs are often performed in the case where a property has not been painted for some time. This long period between quality painting jobs is often most apparent in the condition of the doors and windows. This applies to both interior and exterior jobs.

My initial steps when undertaking window and door restoration is to ascertain functionality,  assessing any opening and closing issues, examining locks and closures and identifying any drafts.

After ascertaining the various issues with a particular window, my restoration service process is to clean away residual paint; I often need to release windows that have been painted shut. I scrape off flaking paint and fill and sand the frame. I will address any draft issues and re-fill/ re-putty to secure the glass panes as necessary. I replace dysfunctional locks and window closures and ensure the window functions as it should.

Doors can require similar attention with draft proofing. I regularly remove doors and door handles for repainting, as well as moving and replacing hinges that are damaged or painted over for rehanging. Another service I commonly undertake is to strip the door entirely of paint. This particular services applies for the customer who wants to replace a painted finish with that of oiled, or varnished wood.

One particular painting job I undertook in Eaglemont, Victoria was a period home with a heritage overlay. It had been some time since the house’s front entrance door had been properly reconditioned, which really detracted for the overall look of the house. In order to achieve a flawless finish, I removed the timber door in order to work on it. Taking the time to do this can make a dramatic difference to the quality of the work. Particularly for a job such as this, the aim is for a perfect, mirror finish. I sanded back the door surface and applied two coats of paint, black for the outside and white inside. I replaced the hinges and applied draft exclusion, ensuring smooth operation, as well as removing all the copper handles and fittings on the door, cleaning and then refitting them.

I also reconditioned the heritage screen door, which was non standard and required specialist expertise. IMG_0052

The opportunity to work on challenging projects such as this and achieving such quality transformations is what I find worthwhile and valuable in my work. Also, working with my customers to achieve their aspirations for their property is extremely rewarding.
